emPOWERnetT Healthcare Solution
Customer and/or End User
Our client, Park City Solutions, is a leading vendor of healthcare information technology via the emPOWERnetT ERP solution-supported by PMAM for new enhancements and customization. Our end users included the following health care facilities: Ascension Health, St. Louis, MO-America's largest not-for-profit health system operating across 20 states and the District of Columbia Nueterra/ASC-nationwide developer of more than 200 healthcare facilities such as specialty and surgical hospitals, and ambulatory hospitals/surgical centers Sansum-Santa Barbara Medical Foundation Clinic-with over 150 physicians Spectrum Health-the largest healthcare system in west Michigan, with 10,700 employees and 1,848 beds Texas Health Resources-managing 13 hospitals, 2442 beds, 3200 physicians, including Harris Methodist Health System, Presbyterian Healthcare Resources and Arlington Memorial Hospital

The Challenge

End user customization and enhancement challenges covered the following areas:

  • improving the overall user-friendliness of the system for patients, physicians, and other employees
  • developing web-based platforms for collaborative work, and the dissemination of innovations and best practices across a multi-location, nation wide or region wide organization
  • reducing physicians' "paper-work load" and data errors by automating electronic patient records, managing clinical information, meeting compliance requirements and improving clinical workflow
  • bringing new facilities rapidly on line with individual websites customized for the community, but with full back-integration into the organization-wide system
  • integrating disparate concurrent initiatives (CDE, transcriptions, PACS, CCA) into a technology platform with a user-friendly content management system
  • building community portals to provide medical information and news, update and store patient health records, and enable secure messaging between patients and doctors

The Solution

Solutions to these challenges were created through several projects:

Web Platforms
Enhancing the emPOWERnet™ eHealth integration platform to provide constituents with real-time web access to features such as the membership directory, best practices and knowledge libraries, with focused content, community collaboration tools and search capabilities. Re-designing user interfaces for consistent look, feel and navigation across the entire ecosystem. Creating a mechanism for innovations and best practices to be accessed and communicated through the portal environment. Developing a tool to help users launch new websites as new facilities open-these secure websites can be used by doctors to check or modify the status of their post-operative notes, nearly eliminating the need for paperwork, faxes, and phone calls.

Patient Data Monitoring Systems
Designing a patient data management system with computerized charting, available in a format that can be used by patients, hospital and physician's for managing documentation.

Patient Safety Systems
Developing a system with an improved workflow and a low human component designed to minimize medication errors.

Health Benefits Administration
The new online enrollment system makes the sign-up process fast and convenient for purchasers, and also eliminates the usual manual errors.

Workflow Management System
Data posted by a physician or patient has to go through a validation channel to ensure completeness and accuracy. The system makes sure that this workflow is maintained for all documents or reports posted.

Content Management
Customizing content display for individual healthcare facilities, de-bugging and re-writing certain modules in the ERP system, changing menu configurations, and website facelifts where needed.

Technology
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2000
  • Oracle 9i
  • XML for terminal streaming, EDI as a third Party API
  • Visual Basic 6.0
  • Active Server Pages 3.0
  • emPOWERnet™ Developers Toolkit

Resulting Benefits
The successful customization and enhancements we made to the ERP package offered end users a wide range of benefits. The speed of their consumer portals rose by 40%. Patient satisfaction grew as a result of the more interactive and user-friendly interface. As offline manual processes came online, staff productivity improved. Collaboration and the dissemination of best practices and innovations provided further intangible benefits. The improvement in patient safety and care quality also had positive reputation effects. For the thousands of clinicians, administrators and patients in the health care facilities we served, millions of data records were now available seamlessly-providing access to authorized individuals anytime, anywhere. Access to external data-the latest protocols in clinical oncology for example, were available without leaving the site. Once a service or application had been created-say a web nursery application-it became available to all hospitals in the network, with the option to switch it on or not, given their needs.
